TITLE: LATCHKEY TEACHER

JOB STATUS: FMLA-NON-EXEMPT, PART-TIME HOURLY

REPORTS TO: ECE SUPERVISOR

DEPARTMENT: DEPARTMENT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION


POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Latchkey Teacher is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the before- and after-school program. This includes ensuring student safety, managing program logistics, supporting instructional staff, and meeting all state and district compliance requirements related to childcare and program quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Ensure the safety of all students at all times, including active supervision.
  • Take daily attendance and document all parent fees and related paperwork.
  • Write and implement lesson plans, adjusting for developmental needs and interests.
  • Address discipline issues immediately and appropriately.
  • Submit all required documentation (e.g., payment logs, attendance, state postings, reports) by district deadlines.
  • Post and maintain schedules (snack, bus, daily, etc.) and complete Kronos entries timely to ensure accurate payroll.
  • Meet weekly with the Instructional Assistant to plan and discuss activities (3:00–3:25 PM).
  • Remain in the assigned Latchkey area at all times unless coverage has been secured.
  • Practice fire, tornado, and reverse evacuation drills monthly; document all drills.
  • Ensure state-required postings and State Notebook are up-to-date.
  • Maintain current certifications in First Aid, Child Abuse, Communicable Disease, and CPR.
  • Complete all Step Up to Quality requirements: PD hours, PD plans, self-assessments, etc.
  • Inspect playground daily and complete safety check forms; keep first aid kit updated and accessible.
  • Assist with snack and activity setup/cleanup.
  • Administer medication per guidelines and maintain locked storage in the school office.
  • Stay with children if a bus is late in the morning or a parent is late at pickup; log additional time on Kronos.
  • Report absences according to Latchkey Office protocols; excessive absences may result in disciplinary action.
  • Respond to all emails, voicemails, and texts promptly.
  • Report early and work required hours during inclement weather, professional development, or early release days.
  • Follow all district and Latchkey Office expectations and directives as outlined in the Orientation Packet and Staff Handbook.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Required certifications in First Aid, Child Abuse, Communicable Disease, and CPR

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience leading or supporting programming for school-aged children
  • Familiarity with Step Up to Quality or similar early childhood quality rating systems


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to lead a classroom and manage daily operations independently
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, families, and colleagues
  • Organizational and planning skills
  • Effective time management and leadership skills in childcare or educational environments
  • Knowledge of basic documentation, recordkeeping, and communication protocols


PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Tools/Equipment Use: Desktop PC with keyboard and mouse, laptop, scanner, calculator, software, desk, and adjustable chair.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying (less than 10 pounds).
  • Environment: Works in office and school setting; may require occasional irregular hours and/or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
