Position Summary

Under general supervision from the Farm Manager, the Farm Laborer 2 participates in agricultural operations to support plant and livestock research programs at the OSU Wooster Campus. This role involves caring for livestock, planting and harvesting crops, operating farm equipment, and supervising student employees and other farm laborers.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision & Leadership (13–33%)

Supervise one or more farm laborers and student employees in livestock care, crop production, and general farm tasks. May assist in maintaining security of residents or inmates, if applicable.

Livestock Care (34–44%)

Feed and care for cattle, swine, and/or poultry. Grind and prepare feed; breed heifers and sows; assist with farrowing. Administer treatments for parasites and other medical conditions.

General Farm Labor (11–31%)

Clean barns and outbuildings; clear brush and cut trees. Build fences, bale hay, and maintain farm infrastructure. Operate and maintain tractors, trucks, and other equipment.

Crop Production (11–31%)

Prepare soil, plant, fertilize, and harvest crops. Prune orchards and spray trees. Participate in the production, storage, and transportation of agricultural commodities.

Required Qualifications

Minimum education; High School Diploma or GED Experience: 100 hours of training in general farming or 1 month of equivalent experience. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated general physical fitness. Skill in operating farm machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of agricultural practices and safety procedures. Experience supervising others in a farm setting. Familiarity with livestock breeding and crop management.

Working Conditions

Outdoor work in all weather conditions. May involve interaction with mental health patients or inmates in correctional facilities. Physical labor including lifting, bending, and operating heavy machinery.

Salary Range: $15.75-19.69. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications
